You Became Parents, but You're Still Partners.

When you have a child, everything reorganizes around them, which is exactly as it should be for a while. But the two of you are still the foundation under all of it, and you deserve care too. Therapy gives you a quiet hour to turn back toward each other, so the love that started your family doesn't get lost in the work of raising your children.

After the Baby

When Parenthood Strains the Couple

Counseling for new parents is for after the baby arrives and your relationship is under a heightened amount of stress. Therapy can help when:

  • Neither of you are sleeping, and the smallest things turn into fights you never used to have.
  • Most of your conversations become logistical: feedings, naps, pickups, scheduling.
  • Physical closeness and intimacy have faded, and you're not sure how to find your way back.
  • You can't remember the last time you were alone together without a child or a screen in the room.
  • You and your partner parent differently, and those differences are starting to feel like a wedge.
  • You love your kids deeply, but you quietly miss the couple you used to be.

Understanding the Work

Protecting Your Bond Through the Hardest, Busiest Years

Raising young children can be as joyful as it can be relentless. The goal here is not to add one more thing to your overflowing plate. It's to help you regulate stress, communicate without it turning into conflict, and remain connected while giving to everyone else.

Parenting Can Be Stressful

Two-thirds of couples report being less happy after having children. Despite the joys that children bring, parenting introduces multiple stressors that can affect even the strongest relationships.

Many parents recognize one or more of these common pressure points:

  • Exhaustion
  • Feeling like everyone wants a piece of you
  • Losing your sense of identity
  • Loss of passion or sexual intimacy
  • Loss of privacy
  • No time as a couple
  • Kids with behavior issues or special needs
  • Different approaches to child-raising and spending habits
  • Difficulty balancing work and home life

If any of these feel familiar, couples therapy can help you and your partner find a road to peace and understanding. Your kids matter, and you matter too. You no longer need to put yourself last.

Can My Marriage Be Saved?

We believe every relationship can be saved when both partners are committed and willing. Once children are involved, it becomes even more important to work through your differences and heal what has been strained. We've seen couples on the brink of separation bounce back to lead healthy, communicative, love-filled lives together.

They call parenting the hardest job in the world for a reason. It's normal for parents to feel anxiety, fear, and frustration during those formative years. Often, the love and care parents invest in their children results in the sacrifice of their own romantic relationship. If you want to repair how you relate to one another for the sake of your children, it helps to seek counseling sooner rather than later.

How We Help New Parents

We work with you to rebuild the love that is the foundation of your family life. Together, your therapist will help you identify stressors and find solutions to minimize their impact. You will learn to validate and encourage one another, understand and regulate your emotions, and find solutions that improve your everyday quality of life.

Our therapists trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy can help you regulate emotions and communicate effectively. By using DBT for Couples, you'll learn:

  • To better understand and read emotions
  • To accept yourself and your partner
  • Skills to prevent the escalation of disagreements
  • To value the time you spend together
  • To express yourself and feel understood
  • Mindful solutions for managing problems

Our team provides a safe, confidential place to communicate honestly so you can rediscover the bond that built your relationship. It's time to heal and connect for the sake of your partnership and the well-being of your children.

Embracing This Season

Life with young children brings chaos, but it doesn't have to result in lasting damage to your relationship. Our clinicians collaborate with you to guide you through this transformative period and help you find peace and acceptance amid its challenges.

Your children will only be young once. Our evidence-based treatment and mindfulness strategies empower you to embrace the present moment rather than wishing it away, so you and your partner can navigate this significant life transition with support and understanding.

How We Help

Our Approach to This Work

We lean on DBT for Couples to help you both name and steady big emotions when you are exhausted and stretched thin, and on the Gottman Method to rebuild closeness, repair after the hard moments, and protect time for your relationship. Together these give you practical, in-the-moment skills you can use at the dinner table and at 3 a.m., not just in the therapy room.

Common Questions

Questions About Counseling for New Parents

We are completely exhausted and have no free time. How do new parents even fit this in?

We hear this from almost every couple we see, and we build around it. Online sessions across New Jersey let you meet after bedtime or during a nap without arranging childcare or a commute, and we work with you to find a weekly time that actually fits your life right now.

Can we do sessions in person or online?

Both. You can meet us in person in Princeton or Manalapan, or online anywhere in New Jersey. Many new parents start online for the flexibility and switch to in person when it gets easier, and that is completely fine.

Can we bring the baby to a session?

A young infant who naps or feeds during the hour is usually no problem, and we would rather you come with your baby than not come at all. For deeper conversations it often helps to have an hour that is just the two of you, so online sessions during a nap can be a good middle ground.

Is it normal for things to get this hard after having kids?

Yes. Many couples feel less connected and more on edge in the early years of parenting, and it does not mean your relationship is failing. It means you are carrying a lot. Reaching out now is a sign of strength, and it tends to be easier to reconnect sooner rather than later.

Do you only work with couples?

Yes. Couples are all we do. Every therapist here is trained specifically in working with two partners, so your sessions are focused entirely on your relationship and the two of you raising your family together.
