You Do Not Have to Decide Alone, or All at Once

When divorce is on the table, the choice can feel impossible to make and impossible to avoid. Discernment counseling gives you a calm, structured space to slow down and look honestly at your relationship before you decide anything. It is not about being talked into staying or pushed toward leaving. It is about getting clear, together, on what comes next.

Standing at the Crossroads

When You Are Not Sure You Can Stay

Discernment counseling is for couples on the edge of a decision, especially when one of you is leaning out. It fits when:

  • One of you is leaning toward divorce while the other still hopes to repair the relationship.
  • You keep starting the same conversation about whether to stay, and it never reaches an answer.
  • You have quietly looked up attorneys or imagined living apart, but you are not sure you really want that.
  • You feel stuck between trying again and giving up, and the not knowing is exhausting.
  • You have tried regular couples therapy before and it did not feel like the right fit for where you are now.
  • You want to make this decision thoughtfully, especially with children or years of history in the balance.

Understanding the Work

A Clear Path Through an Uncertain Time

Discernment counseling is a short, structured process for couples on the brink of divorce. The goal is not to fix the relationship in a handful of sessions. The goal is to help you decide, with confidence, which direction to take.

Is There Any Hope Left?

We have helped countless couples bounce back from the brink of divorce. We truly believe that with dedication and commitment, there is the possibility for reconnection and renewal.

Evidence-Based Discernment Counseling

All of our treatments are based on evidence and aim to yield long-term results. For discernment counseling, we use the only evidence-based method on the market, created by the Doherty Relationship Institute. The goal of Doherty's Discernment Counseling is to have one to five sessions with a trained expert who will help you decide what to do next. Couples who decide not to divorce may elect to pursue standard couples therapy as an ongoing way to strengthen their relationship.

Helping You Find Peace

Couples often ask questions at the beginning of discernment counseling: What if we don't make it? How do we get through this? In the rare chance that discernment counseling leads to a parting of ways, we will help you navigate the road ahead with as little damage as possible. When a couple decides to divorce, the ramifications can impact the children involved and the rest of the extended family.

We address primary emotions so that healing is achievable for the couple and everyone else involved. If you do ultimately decide to divorce, we will help you do it in an amicable, mutually respectful way, forging a new path for everyone.

But What if We're Too Broken?

From infidelity to intimacy issues to emotional cheating to navigating financial strain, our experts have seen positive results regardless of the obstacle you are facing. As couples therapists, it is always our goal to preserve the relationship and the family. We have seen couples with their minds set on divorce find a way through. There is no such thing as too broken.

How Discernment Counseling Helps

We want both partners to feel seen, heard, and understood during this transitional time. A trained expert can facilitate sessions focused on the next steps and how you can best show up for yourselves and each other. Without the help of an unbiased third party, it is difficult to communicate your needs equally and weigh all of your options.

Discernment counseling is a great way to look at the entire scope of your relationship, identifying trends that are useful and patterns that are holding you back and preventing you from feeling safe with each other. We firmly believe that even during challenges, there is always a beacon of hope when love serves as the foundation for a partnership.

How We Help

Our Approach to This Work

We use the Doherty Relationship Institute method, the only evidence-based approach built specifically for couples deciding whether to stay together. What to Expect

How Discernment Counseling Works

This is a short, structured process built to bring clarity, not to push you in either direction.

1

Getting Grounded

We start by understanding where each of you stands and how you both arrived at this crossroads.

2

Two Perspectives

You each have one-on-one time with the therapist, so both of your views are fully heard without interruption.

3

Three Paths

Together we look honestly at three options: keeping things as they are, moving toward separation, or committing to a season of couples therapy.

4

A Confident Choice

You leave with a clear sense of direction and a decision you can stand behind, whatever it turns out to be.

My husband and I have been working with our therapist for over a year now, and we are so pleased with the knowledge, guidance, and expertise. She is so patient and understanding, and we both feel like she is on our side. We couldn't be more grateful that we found this practice.

What You Gain

The Clarity You Came For

Discernment counseling is about reaching a confident decision, whichever way it goes. Here is what you gain.

  • You gain a clear, honest picture of your relationship instead of staying stuck in the not knowing.

  • You understand the patterns that brought you here and the part each of you plays in them.

  • You make a decision about your future together with confidence rather than fear or pressure.

  • You feel genuinely heard, and so does your partner, even on the hardest topics.

  • If you choose to repair the relationship, you move into couples therapy with real clarity and direction.

Common Questions

Questions About Discernment Counseling

Is discernment counseling the same as couples therapy?

No. Couples therapy works to improve and repair the relationship, while discernment counseling helps you decide whether to do that work at all. It is a short, focused process for couples who are not yet sure they want to stay together.

What if one of us wants to leave and the other wants to stay?

That is exactly who discernment counseling is for. It is designed to hold both of your experiences at once, so the partner who is leaning out and the partner who is leaning in can both be understood. You do not have to be on the same page to begin.

How many sessions will we need?

Discernment counseling is brief by design, usually one to five sessions. The aim is clarity and a confident decision, not long-term treatment, so many couples reach a clear next step within a few meetings.

Does discernment counseling mean we are getting divorced?

Not at all. The process makes no assumptions about the outcome. Some couples decide to recommit and begin therapy, others choose to part ways, and the point is simply that you arrive at that decision thoughtfully and together.

Can we meet in person, or is this offered online?

Both. You can meet with us in person at our Princeton or Manalapan offices, or online from anywhere in New Jersey. Many couples appreciate the privacy and ease of meeting online during such a sensitive time.
