You Show Up Differently When You Understand Yourself
Every relationship in your life carries a little of your history with it. The way you handle conflict, the way you ask for what you need, the way you pull close or step back. Individual therapy at CTS gives you one quiet hour to look at those patterns honestly, name where they came from, and start choosing something better. The work is yours, but the people around you feel the change.
Relationship Work, On Your Own
When the Patterns Follow You
Individual relationship therapy is for working on your side of the dynamic, with or without a partner. It helps when:
- You notice the same arguments and the same hurt showing up in relationship after relationship, and you want to understand why.
- Dating feels exhausting, and you cannot tell whether the problem is who you are choosing or how you are showing up.
- You hold back what you really feel because conflict scares you, and the distance is starting to cost you.
- You reach for closeness and then panic when you get it, or you go numb and pull away without meaning to.
- You carry hurt from a past relationship that still shapes how you trust the people in your life now.
- You want to understand your own patterns and triggers before they keep running the show.

Understanding the Work
Relationship Work That Starts With You
Individual therapy here is still about connection. We focus on the part of every relationship that travels with you everywhere: your own patterns, your attachment style, and the stories you tell yourself about closeness. When that gets clearer, your relationships with partners, family, friends, and coworkers get clearer too.
Caring for Yourself Strengthens Your Relationship
In couples therapy, partners work on healing old wounds, confronting past traumas, and focusing on areas of deep self-reflection. At times, this can lead to an uncomfortable awareness of ourselves and what we personally need to work on. While couples therapy can be one of the most meaningful journeys you embark on as a unit, it is equally important to care for your individual needs and emotional well-being while processing relationships.
Individual therapy offers a dedicated space for self-exploration, allowing you to delve into your past, uncover patterns, and develop a deep understanding of your emotions and triggers. You can identify unresolved traumas, negative belief systems, and unproductive behaviors that might unknowingly shape your relationship.
A Safe Space to Process
Whether you are seeing a therapist in our practice for couples therapy or not, all of our psychotherapists are trained in individual-centered modalities and can offer you a place to feel understood, validated, and on a path toward healthier relationships and more meaningful connections.
Is Individual Therapy at CTS Right for You?
Every member of our staff is a relationship expert, so whether you are struggling with friendships, family issues, work relationships, or romantic partnerships, we are a good resource for you. Our therapists are trained in helping people navigate the nuances of interpersonal connection, including the challenges of dating and finding a lasting partnership.
A Way Forward
In therapy, you can identify the personal stories and perceptions that have been holding you back and rewrite the narrative. More often than not, our patterns and habits stem from messaging we received at some point in our lives.
A good therapist can help you separate your perception from objective reality and help you feel more confident, self-assured, and more deeply connected to the people around you. You will develop skills and ways of thinking that increase your overall quality of life.
Relationships are complex, dynamic journeys that bring together two people with their own histories, personalities, and emotional experiences. Individual therapy can be a catalyst for personal growth that enriches the collective bond.

Common Questions
Questions About Individual Relationship Therapy
Do I have to be in couples therapy to come here for individual work?
No. You are welcome here whether or not you are seeing one of our therapists as a couple. Every member of our staff is a relationship expert, so individual clients get the same depth of care.
Is this the same as regular individual therapy?
It overlaps, but the lens is connection. We focus on the patterns, attachment styles, and beliefs that shape how you relate to partners, family, friends, and coworkers, so your relationships get healthier from the inside out.
Can we meet in person, or is it online only?
Both. We offer in person sessions in Princeton and Manalapan, and we offer online sessions across all of New Jersey if that is easier for your schedule.
What kinds of things do people work on here?
Common themes include repeating relationship patterns, dating struggles, anxiety or avoidance around closeness, healing from a past relationship, communication, and understanding your own triggers and needs.
How do I get started?
