The Wedding Is One Day. The Marriage Is the Rest of Your Lives.

Premarital counseling isn't about making sure what you have is perfect. It's about walking into marriage with clarity, understanding, and the tools needed to keep choosing each other year after year.

Before the Big Day

Starting a Marriage Strong

Premarital counseling is for couples who want to build a solid foundation for a lifetime of commitment. It tends to help when:

  • Wedding planning has you arguing more than expected, and it's catching you both off guard.
  • You're merging two families, two budgets, and two sets of expectations, and it feels like a lot.
  • You love each other deeply, but you have never really talked through money, kids, or the hard stuff.
  • You keep hearing how hard marriage is, and you want to go into it with more than hope.
  • You and your partner handle conflict differently, and you're not sure how to come together.
  • You want to build effective habits now, while things are good, instead of waiting until they're not.

Understanding the Work

Starting Your Marriage With Purpose

The stress no one warns you about and how a strong foundation changes everything that comes after.

Is Premarital Counseling Right for Us?

Marriage is one of the biggest life choices anyone can make. We recommend that all couples attend counseling before tying the knot, with one goal in mind: to build a strong foundation for the rest of your lives together. In your sessions, you'll learn how to communicate effectively, validate each other, and grow in love and respect.

The Unspoken Stress

When couples are getting ready for their big day, it's usually all congratulations and well wishes. While it should be a happy and exciting time, not many people call attention to how stressful wedding planning can be. Whether it's negotiating family relationships, figuring out finances, or planning your reception, the months leading up to marriage can place undue strain on a relationship.

Many couples argue more during this time and feel shame and isolation because no one is talking about the challenges of the pre-marital phase. There's a lot to work through and negotiate, and we're here to help make it easier.

A Lifetime of Commitment

We truly believe that love that can last a lifetime. At CTS, we provide the tools needed for partners to navigate life's challenges and thrive together. Our approach extends beyond temporary solutions: these sessions are opportunities for growth that empower you to apply newfound insights long after counseling ends.

Embarking on the journey of til death do us part is a significant commitment, which makes it an opportune time to establish a solid foundation of communication. We study your communication styles and help you learn how to best come together. Couples who engage in this process, and work collaboratively to build healthy dialogues, set the stage for long-term success and lifelong love.

Investing in your relationship through premarital counseling is a profound commitment. We believe it's one of the best investments you'll ever make. It will lay the groundwork for a resilient and fulfilling partnership that withstands the test of time.

What to Expect

How Premarital Counseling Works

We move from getting to know you as a couple to practicing the skills you will carry into marriage.

1

Begin

We start by getting to know your relationship, your history together, and what you each hope your marriage will feel like.

2

Explore

We talk through the topics couples rarely cover before the wedding: money, family, intimacy, and how you each handle conflict.

3

Practice

You learn concrete communication tools and try them on real conversations, with your therapist guiding the way.

4

Prepare

We turn insight into a shared plan for the life you are building, so you walk into marriage on the same page.

My husband and I have been working with our therapist for over a year now, and we are so pleased with the knowledge, guidance, and expertise. She is so patient and understanding, and we both feel like she is on our side. We couldn't be more grateful that we found this practice.

What You Build

What You Walk Away With

Couples leave premarital counseling with more than reassurance. Here is what you build before the wedding.

  • A shared language for talking through hard topics before they harden into resentments.

  • Real clarity on money, family, and expectations, decided together instead of assumed.

  • Communication tools you will use for the whole marriage, not just the engagement.

  • A deeper understanding of how your partner thinks, feels, and shows love.

  • Confidence that you are starting your marriage on a strong, intentional foundation.

Common Questions

Questions About Premarital Counseling

Do we need premarital counseling if our relationship is already strong?

Premarital counseling is not about fixing something broken. It is most valuable when things are good, because it gives you the tools and shared language to keep them that way through everything marriage brings.

Is your premarital counseling religious?

No. Our premarital counseling is non religious and welcoming of every couple, including LGBTQIA couples. It is built around communication, connection, and the practical realities of building a life together.

How many sessions does premarital counseling take?

It varies by couple. Some come for a focused handful of sessions before the wedding, others continue into ongoing couples therapy. Your therapist will help you find the right rhythm for where you are.

When should we start?

Earlier is better, ideally several months before the wedding, so you have room to work through the big topics without the pressure of a looming date. That said, it is never too late to invest in your foundation.

Can we do premarital counseling online?

Yes. We see couples in person in Princeton and Manalapan, and online anywhere in New Jersey, so you can do this work around a busy engagement schedule.
